Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
