Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
