Toto Wolff Set to Sell Shareholding Pricing Mercedes F1 at £4.6bn

Team Principal Wolff has led the Mercedes team to record-breaking success in Formula 1

Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding approximately five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team principal and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos Group, who each also own one-third of the enterprise.

An official representative said: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group acquired its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise reflects the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and earned over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
